Land near GTac mine site now back open, DNR says

More good news via the DNR's email notification system, and note also that forest land closed by the Legislature in the area of the potential mine is now back open:

Gogebic Taconite withdraws preapplication notice

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has received a letter from Gogebic Taconite, LLC, notifying the department that the company is withdrawing its preapplication notice related to a proposed iron mine in northern Wisconsin.

Gogebic was considering development along a four-mile stretch east of the community of Mellen. The area of interest straddles the boundary between Iron and Ashland counties and lies between Tyler Forks River to the east and Ballou Creek to the west.

The letter follows the February closing of the company’s Hurley office. Department officials will continue to work with the company to complete necessary work on the site to ensure the site is properly maintained and environmentally stable.

In addition, the portions of the potential mining site that are enrolled in the Managed Forest Law Program will revert to open status. As provided under the managed forest law statutes, those lands may now be used by members of the public for hunting, fishing, hiking, sight-seeing and cross-country skiing...

You can also find additional information on the Gogebic Taconite, LLC, Web page.
