Grassroots opposition to 26,000-pig farm in Bayfield County

Updated: Text and video at this site about a plan by an Iowa CAFO (concentrated animal feeding operation) to open a 26,000 pig farm in Bayfield County that would pose environmental risks close to Lake Superior and make huge demands on the area's groundwater.

The WI DNR now managed with Scott Walker's "chamber of commerce mentality" is reviewing the out-of-state operator's paperwork.

The larger context: the Wisconsin Legislature could soon give groundwater permit holders permanent rights to large amounts of well water.

Note also that this is in the same area where residents successfully fought off miles of deep, open-pit iron ore mining, protecting groundwater and Lake Superior.

We need to make this all about avoiding the disaster in Flint, Michigan. What Walker is doing is really just as deadly and divisive. While heavy metals and contaminants there cause life-long and irreverable cognitive impairments and creates life-and-death health hazards, the fecal matter in our water can and will kill quickly.
