Wisconsin Voter ID Centers Will Be Open 20 Hours A Week, But Mute Your Applause

The good news: Wisconsin will not cut the number of DMV offices where the new Voter Suppression Exemption ID's will be issued - - and, in fact, four new offices far from the state's SE Wisconsin urban core will open.

The bad news: these offices, which will cost $10 million to operate in the next two years, are open only half time and with virtually no weekend hours.

My guess is that they're not on bus lines either.

The ID requirement is a bad idea, but if the Republicans insist on keeping it, why not allow County Clerks to issue the IDs?

This would not be a new idea; back when I was young enough to get carded at bars, I carried a "Wisconsin ID" issued by the Dane County Clerk showing my picture and my birthday. County Clerks' offices are open every day during business hours, and the lines are shorter than at the DMV, so IDs would be more accessible if County Clerks could issue them.

Even better -- let municipal clerks issue them too, if they want.
