Last Coal-Burning Ferry On Great Lakes Wants Five More Years To Switch Fuels

The S. S. Badger now wants another five years to stop burning coal as its fuel source, according to news reports, which means the operator also wants to continue dumping its coal ash into Lake Michigan.

This blog has covered the issue for some time - - more than two years ago, here, and later, for example, here- - and it's also been a long time since the company began dithering about burning a cleaner fuel source.

But has found the time to run a high-octane PR campaign to slow the regulatory process.

And if Tea Party'Libertarian/Republican efforts to weaken the EPA succeed in Congress, (hat tip, Ron Johnson, et al), the Great Lakes may continue to be the Manitowoc, WI-to-Ludington, MI ship's coal-slurry discharge pond.

I always wondered about the source of the coal clinker you find on Lake Michigan beaches. I'd assumed it was old; from some time in the past when urban residential or industrial clinker was dumped in the lake instead of on land.
