He was an American hero.

Jim, as a much younger person, your father in law was my second hero, replacing Packers quarterback Bart Starr.
I worked my tail off for Senator McGovern in 1972, and was sorely disappointed that I couldn't vote for him, as I didn't turn 18 until 5 weeks after the presidential election. I was fortunate enough to meet and speak with him a few years ago when he spoke at a brown bag lunch event in Milwaukee.
HE is the reason that I became re-engaged in political campaigns in 2008 when President Barack Obama ran for the position. I wish that President Obama would push for at least half of what Senator McGovern stood for.
Condolences and prayers for Susan and you. Today is a day when we should fly the flag at half mast.

He was a gentleman.
Sincere condolences, Jim, and to all the family.
He was my senator for many years until I moved to Wisconsin in 1993. My first presidential vote was cast for him.
There is a very large rent in the American fabric. My deep sympathies to yours and Susan's family.
Godspeed George- we will miss you.
Perfectly said in barely 50 words. And what a great photo. You and your family are in our thoughts.
Thank you all for these comments. I'll try and get back to those of you who signed your names a bit later.
My condolences. As I mentioned before, I voted for him in 1972, even though I knew he had no chance of winning. How could any thinking person do otherwise?
I only wish there was anyone of such standards today in either party.
America's loss
George McGovern gave politics a good name. He will be missed.
My condolences to you, Jim, and your family.
Jim: My condolences to you and Susan. I'm struck by the everyday heroism and grace that the men of Sen. McGovern's generation displayed during World War II. To think that his patriotism was later impugned just wasn't fair or right. Marc
I'm a reader who is proud to say that my first vote for president was for Mr. McGovern. Condolences to your family.
