UW's 'Flexible Option Degree' Could Resolve Walker's Dropout Embarrassment

Maybe getting into place a Wisconsin college degree program from which Scott Walker could finally graduate helps explain the rush to get the program up and running without all the details nailed down (side note - - in officials' quiet disregard for the program's timetables, I hear an echo of the launch troubles of HealthCare.gov?).

Looks to me like the agenda is to help Walker put an end to those nettlesome questions about leaving behind at Marquette an unfinished undergraduate degree and 2.59 GPA.

A new self-paced, competency-based program for finishing a college degree online, and ostensibly making college more affordable and accessible, was announced Tuesday by Gov. Scott Walker and two top University of Wisconsin System officials.

The new UW Flexible Degree is touted as a transformation of higher education in Wisconsin, and an economic engine to drive up the state's per capita income by producing more college graduates trained for higher-paying jobs.

"Competency based", you have to love that loaded phrase. We'll see, as the once great and famous University of Wisconsin takes a big step toward becoming a diploma mill. The new model will based on the Guv's college experience; After all he wasn't there to get an education, he was there to get a job. Who needs to attend lectures and write all those stupid papers when they can just lie about their professional experience and get credit for it? And a little plagiarism never killed anyone. Everyone does it, it's the Republican way.

Well said, Gareth. What further crumbles my cookies is the devaluation of those real UW degrees that some of us worked so hard to earn . . . and pay for.

It seems to me that the new College Equivalency program is designed to become an economic engine for just some people.
