I-94 Expansion At Story Hill A Stick In Milwaukee's Eye

Walker's WisDOT is beginning that "too-early-to-say" planning talk about widening I-94 at Story Hill.

You know: Phase one, too early to know just how this might work out after all the meetings, charettes and comments.

Then Phase two: "Too late to change anything."

Bulldozers, start your engines.

Highway Expansion A Dagger Pointed At Milwaukee's West Side

And nothing's changed, except West side Milwaukee, your recall case just got a fresh chapter.

Details here.

We have several "Stand With Walker" supporters on Story Hill. I wonder if they realize the ramifications of having these freeways at eye level as planned.

It will indeed be a Park East Freway above those graves.

TUNNELING IS THE ONLY VIABLE ALTERNATIVE IF WE ARE TO HONOR OUR VETERANS AND RESPECT THE RESIDENTS OF STORY HILL.
Time to get out my "STOP FREEWAY EXPANSION SIGN".

I have a better idea: "How about: NO."

The last thing Milwaukee needs is more freeway lanes of any kind.

I've never understood the opposition from the VA cemetery. As it is, graves are crammed against the freeway; do families really brave the noise (and slope toward the freeway) to visit those graves? Move some of them to the new cemetery in Union Grove, create some green space between the other graves and the freeway--and add a lane on each side, please. That spot is a bottleneck both inbound and outbound every day. Alternative: Expand lanes between downtown and Miller Park Way and leave the cemetery/Story Hill stretch as is.
