The Fixation On Jobs Is Walker's Doing

Aside from the intrinsic importance of jobs to a growing economy and attractive state, there is another reason we pay so much attention to the numbers and the trend:

Scott Walker made a campaign mantra out of a pledge to create 250,000 new jobs and 10,000 new businesses in a four-year term,

I've posted about this and cited Walker's campaign website as the evidence.

From his website, 2/23/2010:

Madison – Scott Walker, Milwaukee County executive and candidate for governor, announced today at the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC) Gubernatorial Candidate Forum his ambitious plan to bring 250,000 jobs and 10,000 new businesses to Wisconsin by 2015.
