Oneida County Could Be Next Wisconsin Mining Target

Outside interests are looking at sulfide deposits under the rural county's lands.

And Oneida County is gering up to lease its properties.

If the Walker administration's hurry-up mining review planned for the proposed iron ore mine near Ashland becomes state law, it looks like the soon-to-be-reconstituted Department of Natural Resources/Department of Resource Extraction could be very busy.

Hat tip, KW.

This is particularly disturbing in a county like Oneida which has been a leader in conservation planning and is said to hold the highest concentration of lakes of any jurisdiction in the world!

I, too, care deeply about this area.

Norther Wisconsin has done so much greater good by protecting the clean, cool reservoir of Lake Superior. Environmental damage for short-term profit is unconscionable.
