After The Senate Vote, The Truth Comes Out

Despite all the denials and phony bluster to the contrary, there will be damage to the environment, says State Sen. Tom Tiffany, (R-Hazelhurst), the lead GOP sponsor, and the bill rewrites the law to help make environmental challenges fail in court:

“If the law is challenged and ends up in court, the judge needs to know it was the Legislature’s intent to allow adverse (environmental) impacts. That way, a judge can’t find fault if the environment is impacted.”

File at #despicableGOP.

And hat tip to State Journal reporter Ron Seely for the story.

Tiffany - the backbone or should I say the mining company conduit has just revealed a most incredibly revealing fact.

This is indeed BIZZARRO WISCOSIN!

It doesn't get any more absurd

And this guy is the sponsor of the bill?

What Dem Sen. last night said that the bill as written was actually a pro environmental bill?

“The bill reflects the reality of mining. There are going to be some impacts to the environment above the iron ore body,” said Tiffany, R-Hazelhurst. “If the law is challenged and ends up in court, the judge needs to know it was the Legislature’s intent to allow adverse (environmental) impacts. That way, a judge can’t find fault if the environment is impacted.”

Mother of God!!!!!!

This is probably a dumb question, but can a Senator change their vote after this has passed? My instinct is no (not that I think any would), but I wonder, since it isn't law yet.

Lie, stonewall, and spin, and never be truthful until the facts become irrelevant -the GOP way. And where was our media on this for the last several months (other than Ron Seeley)? No wonder this state is in major trouble

Tiffany is a standout Stupid in the Stupid Class. I doubt if any judges will be influenced by his legal strategy. The best way to make the mining legislation lawsuit-proof would be to write it so as not to conflict with existing state and federal law throughout. However, they are so full of themselves they couldn't resist. This is what happens when you have a bunch of bidnessmen running the legislature. The monkeys have taken over the lab.

Of course there are impacts to the environment which may be negative. This also happens every time we build a house or a road or anything else. It is actually a brilliant move to put this in the bill itself since it will ultimately result in it being easier to defend against frivolous lawsuits in the future.

Thank you to Sen. Schultz and Senate Democrats for
Their votes against this horrible mining bill. This fight
Against the mine is FAR from over. We have a moral
Obligation to protect our finite resources for future
generations. NO MINE.

@ Anonymous 5:12 AM:

Yer an idiot for thinking that the footprint of a house or even a road is in the same ballpark as the 22-mile long, 1000 ft deep, mile-wide open pit that this mine will be. Not even to mention the sulfuric acid created, as well as deforestation, groundwater poisoning, air pollution and surface water pollution miles and miles downstream. Those are just the highlights if you will of the environmental devastation the mine will bring to currently pristine waters, lands and forests . . and air.

Your attempt to grotesquely minimize the environmental impacts shows the depth of your ignorance and your willingness to parrot the G-Tac talking points. You'd better have the G-Tac lawyers and public relations fakes come up with something better. We in Wisconsin are better educated and more experienced at thinking for ourselves than the poor folks in Virginia who've been victimized by the mining companies, including Cline, since the 19th century.

And to call the lawsuits that will surely follow "frivolous" is ridiculous (you might have look that one up): your mining legislation is frivolous, courtesy of G-Tac lawyers and stupid Wisconsin legislators who know nothing about the law, science, ecosystems or history--just to name a few things of which they are ignorant. You're just a patsy for the out-of-state interests. And good luck if you think you're getting a G-Tac job: they've never mined taconite before and their company has a horrible safety record everywhere it has operated. Are you willing to give an arm, a leg or a lung to back up your silly claims?

I am so disappointed here that I just don’t know what to do. The bill is going to pass and now the mining forces are spreading lies about the Anishinabe people that I will not repeat here. I was up north yesterday and they are howling out loud laughing about the bill passing and the native Americans. I got so disgusted, I came back home just to be around normal people. Honestly, you just cannot believe how ignorant and racist those people up north are. I don’t ever want to go back there again. I love lake Superior but I don’t think that I will ever be able to visit there again just thinking about the attitude of hate that surrounds it.
