Milwaukee Street Crews Defeat The Blizzard
Got a problem-free ride downtown to see John Hiatt and Lyle Lovett at the Pabst Wednesday night just hours after the blizzard blew itself out of town. The only traffic congestion was in the underground parking garage on the way out. As the performers said, Milwaukee knows how to deal with snow.
Cities are only as good as their basic services. Milwaukee did itself proud the last couple of days.

Having grown up in northern Wisconsin, I'd like to say that the weather events of the last few days have felt, well, normal. Not that blizzards are typical even there, but lots of snow dumped by multiple storms, bitter winds and bitter temps sometimes creating windchills of -30, -40, -50 degrees.
We cancelled school, stayed at home, bundled up if we absolutely HAD to go out, drove EXTREMELY carefully and many times waited a day or two for the snowplow to reach our street. My Mother was a nurse. I remember at least once she got a ride to work in the cab of a snowplow.
Kudos to you Jim for carrying on, although it should be pointed out that you were able to make the concert at least 12 hours after the howling winds had ceased.
For the rest of us, it was a day to stay at home and be reminded that we are not in charge.
By-the-way we didn't have 24-7 storm coverage or live camera feeds from the interstate either. We were so deprived.
Having worked for two Mayors, I've been in plenty of meetings about emergency responses to flooding, snow, ice storms and the like.
Milwaukee's DPW response to this storm was really outstanding.
