Why We Have A Great Lakes Compact: Bulk Water Exports From Alaska Possible

There are reports that bulk water shipments could be made from Alaska to India by tanker ship.

Earlier talk about similar shipments from the Great Lakes to Asian destinations led to the Great Lakes Compact of 2008.

That multi-state agreement, ratified by the US Congress and the Canadian Parliament, banned diversions except in containers of less than 5.7 gallons or smaller, or by pipeline any farther than a county that happens to touch the Great Lakes basin boundaries - - hence the City of Waukesha's need to apply to all eight US Great Lakes states for diversion permission., and ubiquitous bottled water sales in the region under brand names such as "Ice Mountain," from a Michigan wetlands.
