Honoring George Vukelich Today

The Wisconsin environmental writer and West Allis native George "Papa Hambone" Vukelich passed away unexpectedly in Madison on this day in 1995.

An immeasurable loss.

Were he still with us, George would be writing up a storm about the ongoing attack on Wisconsin's waters since the chamber of commerce mentality took over the DNR.

The West Virginia open-pit mining outfit that wants to dynamite the Penokee Hills near Ashland and toxify the Bad River watershed close to treaty-protected Ojibwe land and wild-rice estuaries would have had to hire a dozen full-time flacks when the guy in the fishing hat turned "North County Notebook" their way.

His books are available on Amazon, and, I'm sure, in Madison bookstores.

Today would be a good day to pick up a copy and make sure his work continues.
