John Norquist's Sister, Cellist, Dies In Mexico City

Former Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist forwards the sad news that his younger sister Margaret died suddenly in Mexico.




Here are the details:

Margaret Susan Norquist (Romo) died in Mexico City from a stroke on Feb. 3.

Born March 15, 1959 at Brokaw Hospital in Normal, Illinois to Ernest and Jeanette Norquist. At her death she was a cellist in the Mexican National Symphony in Mexico City.

Margaret graduated from Hamilton High in 1977 and was City Conference swimming champ in 1974 and set the city 50 yard freestyle record then which held until 1977.

50yd freestyle record of :27.4 for the first girls' swim meet held in 1974 when girls swimming was introduced to the City Conference.

Margaret graduated from UW-M with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts 1984. She played cello in a quartet at Karl Ratzschs, with the Madison Symphony Orchestra 1987-88 and with the Mexican National Symphony from 1989 to the present.

On Thursday, the Symphony dedicated a concert at Bellas Artes to Margaret.

She is survived by (ex-husband Ramon Romo)), daughters Violeta (18), Lucia (20), brother John Norquist, sisters Carolyn Vargo, Janet Gonzalez, Mary Stetson, Loey Norquist, loving aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, in-laws, cousins, friends and musical colleagues.

In lieu of flowers please send donations to The Jeanette and Ernest Norquist Scholarship Fund at the the String Academy of Wisconsin at UW-M or to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra's Private Lesson Scholarship Program.

A Milwaukee memorial service will be held in the spring.

My deepest condolences to the Norquist family.

Sad to see some one die at such a young age, and it especially hits home when they are less than a month younger than you are.

One of Margaret's brother-in-law's is actually an ex co-worker of mine.

I am very sorry to hear those very sad news. Time ago, I was good friend of Carolyn, in the French & Italian Department at UWM. All my condoleances and sympathy for this premature loss, dear Carolyn.
