Updates On WI Industrial-Scale Dairy (CAFO) Operations

You should check out the important legal and educational work of the Friends of the Central Sands  and its efforts to preserve ground water in the face of overuse by industrial-scale Wisconsin dairy operations known as CAFO's.

The group also posted an update the other day on ongoing legal challenges, here to a CAFO in Richfield.

Why are we doing this?  Invest just 6 minutes of your time and watch this short documentary that we released a few short weeks ago to see the problem we face with our water. It is a fascinating look at this complex issue. Several thousand people have already watched it on YouTube and our website. Please - Watch, Share and Support www.FriendsofCS.org
According to the DNR, the operation would draw 72.5 million gallons of water annually, and house 4,300 dairy cattle and 250 steers,

In the DNR's parlance, as posted:
The proposed dairy facility would house 4,300 milking/dry cows and 250 steers for a total of 6,270 animal units (AU), where one milking/dry cow is equivalent to 1.4 animal units, or a 1,400 pound animal. In addition to other proposed facility structures, the Richfield Dairy would include two high capacity water wells....
Total site disturbance entails the conversion of 115 acres of existing cropland to farm buildings, production area and ancillary area.
