Lake Trash Is Bad; How About Years Of Coal Dust?

Ludington, MI is the home port to the S.S. Badger, which has routinely dumped its coal ash overboard - - for years - - as the last coal-fired steamer on the Great Lakes sails across Lake Michigan from Ludington to Manitowoc, and back.

Some consistency, please, as Ludington is complaining about storm-strewn trash from Milwaukee showing up.

Some details, here.

The SS Badger has burned more than 600,000 tons of coal in its lifetime and has dumped every last ounce of the ash into Lake Michigan.

Manitowoc subsidizes the effort via the MPU, public utility and both Ludington and Manitowoc ignore the ill effects, even though they receive numerous complaints each summer.

Funny, doesn't this blog usually tell us that the crap in our air started here?

Change of tune?

Torpedo the SS Badger, like we really need a ferry to get to Michigan.

It's cheaper and potentially faster driving on our existing highway system.

Even then, the demand for a ferry is probably greater than a train to Madison.

I thought there would be more detail in this blog entry - am I missing some of it?

Most people who ride that ferry have no idea that the coal dumping is permitted. However, it's my understanding that the SS Badger has to end the practice in two years. Have you looked into that, or read the permit? Cheryl Nenn, Milwaukee Riverkeeper, probably knows something about it even though it's out of her territory.

To Lynn: I always encourage people to use the search function on this blog. I did post information about the EPA a year ago, and I suspect there are a dozen previous posts. Enter the word badger in the search for more items.
