Milwaukee Doing A Good Job Fighting Crime

I continue to be impressed with the overall job being done by Chief Ed Flynn and the Milwaukee Police Department to fight and prevent crime.

Mayor Tom Barrett and the Fire and Police Commission made the right choice to bring Flynn in; he seems to understand what the public wants and how to make sure his officers deliver in very difficult environments.

Being chief is a demanding job - - managing a large department, a budget in lean times, balancing crime detection and prevention with protecting civil liberties and community sensitivities.

I've worked in two Mayors' offices, and been around many of the issues that touch a city's policing; it's hard for a city is to find the right personnel and help them succeed.

Milwaukee is on the right track. There is always more to do, as this is about progress and not perfection - - but so far, so good.
