AL Gore On The BP Oil Spill

Definitely worth the read.

Consider the first few graphs from his New Republic essay:

The continuing undersea gusher of oil 50 miles off the shores of Louisiana is not the only source of dangerous uncontrolled pollution spewing into the environment. Worldwide, the amount of man-made CO2 being spilled every three seconds into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding the planet equals the highest current estimate of the amount of oil spilling from the Macondo well every day. Indeed, the average American coal-fired power generating plant gushes more than three times as much global-warming pollution into the atmosphere each day—and there are over 1,400 of them.

And there are almost 3 times as many abortions each day in the U.S. than there are "coal-fired power generating plants." What is worse? Human deaths or oil-drenched seagull deaths? We better get our priorities straight.

Too often anti-abortion arguments are made with no consideration for the environmental and social policies that must be in place to sustain life.

Think about if Anonymous said instead: "Too often anti—murder arguments are made with no consideration for the environmental and social policies that must be in place to sustain life." Is not the illegality of murder—and equivalently the value of human life—defined independently of "the environmental and social policies that must be in place to sustain life?" Does not human life have intrinsic value, independent of the condition and state of the world? We do not define ourselves to be whatever we want; that leads to an abominable disrespect for human rights.

Leave abortion out of this.

Re: Brooklyn Girl: "Leave abortion out of this."

I absolutely will not. It is legalized human murder, and lack of respect for human life, not just animal life, is the number one issue leading to our country's economic demise. Why ignore the elephant in the living room?

I agree that abortion is way off topic here.

No, we were talking about the destruction of wildlife, and I mentioned that the destruction of human life is a more pressing issue.

Geremia, you are a complete moron. Go away.

Irrespective of me, the reality remains: abortion is human murder.
