Tougher OWI Laws Come With Costs
So say Waukesha County court officials.
My guess is that people will say: spend the money, as OWI with our current weak laws cost lives.

That is not necessarily a permanent additional cost. The swift and sure application of the new law and penalties would, in all likelihood, deter much of the drunken driving that now is permitted, not to say encouraged, by the weak law, weakly enforced.
Well worth the cost.
A good place to find some of the money needed for additional prosecution is easily found in the lobby of the courthouse. They got a Homeland Security grant for a metal detector set-up. Strikes this taxpayer as a waste of money--money spent on a low priority security task. We are--all of us--much more endangered by the dangerous and heedless drunks careening down our streets and roads.
