There is a great lesson here for the next big issue ...CO2 emissions. Again, the politicians are too weak to do the honest and right thing and impose a CO2 tax. Instead we will get "cap and trade" with a huge new bureaucracy. Congress will get to deal out allowances to their own favorite interests. They will also try (and likely fail) to pick the winners and loosers in a carbon constrained economy.; June 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM

But don't ignore that Krauthammer also calls for a concomitant reduction in payroll taxes. It's a change to taxes, not a call for a new tax.
