Western Wisconsin - - of course- - needs and deserves federal assistance after devastating flooding, but it would be nice if Wisconsin's GOP members of Congress pressing along with their Democratic counterparts for federal dollars would tone down or deep six their ideological, anti-big guvmint rhetoric and voting records to avoid the pitfall of contradiction when embracing government's helping hand.
* Like when Ron Johnson sounds like every Republican in Congress these days:
Government is too big, too intrusive, too easy with money.
* Like when Ron Johnson sounds like every Republican in Congress these days:
Sen. Ron Johnson: Federal Spending Is America’s Biggest Problem* Or when GOP Cong. Glenn Grothman pitches himself to voters this this way:
I’ll fight to rein in the size and scope of government.* Maybe he or his consultants swiped that from Gop. Cong. Sean Duffy, who had said earlier:
DUFFY VOTES AGAIN TO REIN IN SIZE AND SCOPE OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT* Or both took their inspiration from the record of our state's senior Congressman, Jim Sensenbrenner:
Sensenbrenner signed the Contract with America:
This year’s election offers the chance, after four decades of one-party control, to bring to the House a new majority that will transform the way Congress works. That historic change would be the end of government that is too big, too intrusive, and too easy with the public’s money. It can be the beginning of a Congress that respects the values and shares the faith of the American family...
On the first day of the 104th Congress, the new Republican majority will immediately pass the following major reforms, aimed at restoring the faith and trust of the American people in their government:
- Require all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress;
- Select a major independent auditing firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of Congress for waste, fraud, and abuse;
- Cut the number of House committees, and cut committee staff by one-third;
- Limit the terms of all committee chairs;
- Ban the casting of proxy votes in committee;
- Require committee meetings to be open to the public;
- Require a three-fifths majority vote to pass a tax increase
- Guarantee an honest accounting of our federal budget by implementing zero baseline budgeting.
Without this type of money, Wisconsin's low-running & under-performing economy would be even worse. They systematically destroy jobs that create a middle class. We could be the fiscal disaster Kansas is and we may still "achieve" that status. In the meantime, Walker and his cronies are looking for ways to pump up support in the outbacks of Wisconsin with all the free gubbermint money they can grab so long as it does not benefit the Milwaukee-Madison corridor.
ReplyDeleteWe are their enemies and they cannot hijack elections if they can't proclaim they took the "good" money instead of the "bad" money.
