Ballot access cheating was proposed by officials who were out to depress certain votes in Green Bay, Wisconsin, The Nation reports - - and while the story echoes GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump's wild accusations about voting fraud, the plan was to use the election-staging power of the city clerk's office to cut down UW-Green Bay student balloting because a GOP state legislator had asked, and the clerk believed the kids were voting Democratic.
Documents cited by The Nation, unearthed by One Wisconsin Institute, show the clerk asking state election officials if she could refuse to open an early balloting site on campus:
Or rigging, as Donald Trump might call it.
It's more than a little ironic that the local clerk involved in the Green Bay ballot access mess was appointed by the city's GOP Mayor who, separate from the student balloting scandal, has recently pleaded guilty to a series of campaign finance law violations.

“UWGB is a polling location for students and residents on Election Day but I feel by asking for this to be the site for early voting is encouraging the students to vote more than benefiting the city as a whole,” she wrote on August 26 in an e-mail to David Buerger, counsel at the Wisconsin Ethics Commission. “I have heard it said that students lean more toward the democrats….You see- - there's made-up voting fraud, and there's real election fraud that begins with GOP Gov. Scott Walker's pushing unneeded voter ID, then GOP legislators drafting redistricting maps in secret, then passing GOP-inspired limitations on balloting hours so restrictive that a federal judge had to remove them, then creating the blatantly partisan Green Bay ballot box blockade plan to keep certain people from unfettered voting - - and in Wisconsin, the ruling Republican Party has mastered using state power all of these mechanisms of election obstruction.
Or rigging, as Donald Trump might call it.

Clearly this clerk should be charged with election fraud!
ReplyDelete'“Voters across the ideological spectrum will be outraged that partisan considerations by a Republican political appointee led to students not getting the access to early voting they would have otherwise,” says Analiese Eicher, program director at One Wisconsin Institute.'
ReplyDeleteHahaha, no they won't.
I see the email was to legal counsel. Would be interested to know what the reply was.
Ooops!

The RNC is under court order to not monitor polling places until December 1, 2017 according to a Consent Decree place on them in 1981.
ReplyDeleteThe RNC sent letters to predominantly-black neighborhoods in New Jersey in 1981. When 45,000 letters were returned as undeliverable, the committee compiled a challenge list to remove those voters from the rolls. The RNC then sent off-duty law enforcement officials to the polls and hung posters in heavily black neighborhoods warning that violating election laws is a crime. The effect was to suppress or intimidate black voters.
I hope Trump sends people out to monitor voting in certain areas this year. The RNC won't get out from under the Decree if they do racially charged poll watching this year. If they do the Decree could be extended until 2025.
Where is Obama and the federal DOJ on this? These WisGOPs clearly feel they can do whatever they eant, no matter how slanted or unconstitutional. It is the Federal government's job to remind them who is in charge, and that the right to vote trumps all WisGOP games
ReplyDeleteI was sure I saw an article in the last day or two, saying the AAGs from the Eastern District and Western District of Wisconsin would be watching the vote very carefully. One of the people had the last name Jarosz, but now I can't find it. Maybe someone else can -- I have an appointment.
