An African-American Mississippi truck driver with zero political experience, spent no money on ads or signs or staff, and whose own mother didn't know he was running in the primary, convincingly won statewide voting and claimed the Democratic Party nomination for Governor:
No one [at the barbershop] had met [candidate] Gray, but Gary Downing, who was getting a little off the ears, chimed in, “Can’t do no worse than what we’ve got....”
“People complain about our governor,” [Gray] said. “I’m basically going to do the opposite of what he’s doing.”
