Summit meeting on mining alternatives Wednesday, in Red Cliff

I'd mentioned in a Sunday posting that there would be a conference this week on alternatives to the proposed GTac open-pit iron ore mine in NW Wisconsin.

Organizer Sandra Nevala,(sandra.gokee@redcliff-nsn.gov or phone: (715) 292-5641) writes:

The Chippewa Federation Mining Committee is hosting a Mining Alternatives Summit on January 7th through the 9th. Our goal is to create holistic strategies to implement alternatives to mining in Anishinaabe Akiing by inviting specialists from various backgrounds to share their knowledge about topics such as effects of mining on the environment, economically viable alternatives to mineral extraction, cultural knowledge, and more.

We hope to raise enough money through grants and donations to be able to offer this educational, strategic-planning event as “free and open to the public.” The way it’s looking, we may have to charge a small fee for attendees, but we’re trying hard not to.

We think it is necessary to bring people from all ages and backgrounds together in a good way to celebrate life and create strategies to promote and implement alternatives to mining on our mother earth. There will be a Round Dance celebration and feast to honor and welcome Gichi Manidoo Giizis (Great Spirit Moon) on the first evening of the Summit (Jan 7th).

Facebook users: Insert Mining Alternatives Summit into a Facebook search for more details at the Mining Alternatives Summit page.

Meetings run from:

  • January 7, 11:00 a.m - January 9, 3:00 p.m.

    at:

    • Legendary Waters Resort and Casino
37600 Onigamiing Drive, Red Cliff, Wisconsin 54814
