I'd give her the debate on specifics and clarity.
And what a fluff by Walker - - that the state has the lowest employment since 2008. A Freudian slip from a governor who's hit only 40% of his big, broken jobs promise.
And hooray for her hit on Walker's "divide-and-conquer" strategy, special interest favors, the $700,000 mining donation. Nice that she got the closing three minutes.

Thanks for the blow by blow. You are dead on. Burke WAS direct and clear. Walker, for goodness sakes, even argued with the questions (i.e., the upcoming $1.8 billion deficit). To be honest, I didn't know how each would come across on television, and I was fearful Slippery Scott would come out on top. Thankfully, the truth won out.
ReplyDeleteI agree that she did well. I thought that she could have gone on the attack on Act 10 but probably wise not to strongly oppose this as Walker has B S'd people into believing it was great. In reality all Walker did was replay his campaign ads. But he's now on the record for serving 4 years ,something he wouldn't commit to before. Burke buried him on the minimum wage and living wage issue as Walker refused to answer this even when pressed on it a 2nd time.
ReplyDeleteI listened to the debate on WPR, very interesting difference than watching it on the TV machine. Walker sounded canned and insincere. He was talking so fast, trying to cram in every talking point and commercial, it was hard to understand what he was saying. Mary Burke sounded much more concise and direct plus, she actually answered the questions! I was impressed! Walker... not so much!
ReplyDeleteIt's going to be hard for Burke to come up with new material in another debate though. Walker has been around the block in government so long that he may scorch Burke next time around.
ReplyDeleteUnlikely, in fact it's much more likely Burke destroys him, not only because Walker is too scripted and dumb to win most debates, but also because the real deficit figures will be out by next Friday, and new jobs numbers for Wisconsin will also be out.
DeleteI'm guessing Walker may have an even tougher time defending his failed record with more evidence of failure apparent.
I am tired of the same old talking points by Walker. He has been saying the same things since 1993. Now that he has been in power, with control of all three branches of government, it is clear that what he is selling isn't what Wisconsin needs.
ReplyDelete@Jake,
ReplyDeleteBased on the latest Marquette poll, the jobs issue isn't sticking. Neither is the John Doe since the Chisholm personal bias was exposed.
I was turned off when she didn't stand with the president publicly on Labor Day, or even address the union workers there to celebrate the heritage of organized labor (not that Trek is a non-union shop has anything to do with it). What's she got left that makes you think she can win the next debate enough to swing poll numbers?
Who are you kidding? That Marquette Poll was hilariously biased (GOP +4.6), and please continue to cling to RW talking points on John Doe as Eric O'Keefe keeps making an idiot out of himself and showing how desperate and dishonest the righties are.
DeleteEven with the MU Poll's pro-GOP bias, most respondents don't trust Walker and don't think he cares about them, and another strong Burke performance will reassure people into knowing she's up for the job. And Walker's "we have a work problem" just confirmed this guy's lack of caring for the people who pay his salary.
Your boy is in big trouble, and events over the next week aren't likely to help him.
Well then, let me ask you again since I am a registered voter with no party affiliation, "What's she got left that makes you think she can win the next debate enough to swing poll numbers?"
ReplyDeleteWhat constitutes "...another strong Burke performance..." that would convince the undecided to vote for candidate for Governor Mary Burke?
What will Mary Burke do for Wisconsin, and how, that would make want to give her my vote?
"A registered voter with no party affiliation." Thanks for admitting you're an out-of-state Koch troll, because no one registers with party affiliation in Wisconsin.
DeleteBuh bye.
What does Walker have to talk about? He can't talk about the anti-abortion and anti-equity bills he has sponsored, nor the cuts to education at all levels that he has been promoting for years. Nor can he talk about providing healthcare for everyone or creating jobs - at least not without lying. He can't talk about the structural deficit he has created nor can he talk about the transportation funding shortfall that will require either increasing taxes or slashing agency budgets. And he really can't talk about his time as MKE CO executive - he left the county in shambles. All that he has left to talk about is his family. Tonette and the boys just aren't that interesting.
ReplyDeleteBurke on the other hand can talk about the mechanics of creating jobs and the effect that raising the minimum wage and accepting medicaid money will have on low income families and economic growth. She can talk about the detrimental impact of vouchers on public schools ($139 million wasted in the past 10 years on closed schools)and how she would reign in voucher spending. She can talk about how Scott Walker just isn't that into Wisconsin by sighting all the out of state travel to further his political career. I think there is plenty for Mary Burke to cover - she may just be getting started.

ReplyDeleteCuts to education don't exist in districts that implemented ACT 10. My school district increased it's fund balance by 50% over the last 2 years, has no long term debt, and is now working to fully fund it's OPEB liability. We have not laid off 1 educator. We have expanded our benefits, increased our course offerings, gave every student an ipad and are investing heavily in educator effectiveness.
May Burke needs to brag about the Madison School District's accomplishments to make her case.
@ Jake I'm not a registered Democrat or Republican. I am a union worker taking his late union lunch break.
