Reading about climate change this morning and came across this ranking and related facts:
Owned by Wisconsin Power & Light, the big coal-fired Columbia plant north of Madison is the 88th dirtiest in the country and emits carbon dioxide pollution annually - - 7.2 tons - - equal to the output of 1.51 million passenger vehicles, according to a report's chart on p. 30.
There were about 5.5 million vehicles registered in the state, the most recent data show.
These are the kinds of number responsible for the Obama administration's recent new rules to reduce pollution from coal-fired power plants, as explained by the EPA.
I'd missed an earlier story by Mike Ivey in The Cap Times which had additional data and perspective.
