So what’s the big deal! Milwaukee area taverns were originally owned and/or leased by the brewery companies. They were social gathering places for the workers and neighbors. They sponsored soft ball, bowling leagues, little league teams, held fundraisers for neighbors having hard times and served fish fries on Fridays. It was not a place to go if your primary purpose is to get wasted. By their very nature, neighborhood taverns mean within walking distance. Unfortunately that culture is dying. Try having Applebee’s, Outback Steakhouse or a cocktail lounge host a Sunday afternoon canasta tournament!
