The
measured partisan divide about retaining the race-based name of the NFL franchise in the Nation's Capital helps explain why Wisconsin Republican Governor
Scott Walker signed a bill to make it easier for local schools to keep Native American team logos, mascots and names.
Don't tick off the base.
I fear that the GOP-favored position amounts to "Hey, majority rules!"
ReplyDeleteThis, despite the fact (as I was taught anyway) that part of the genius of our Constitution lies in its protection of the rights of minorities.
On December 21st, the Green Bay Press Gazette posted a poll of readers asking, "Do you agree with the new law that makes it harder to force public schools to drop tribal nicknames?" Of the 1499 respondents, 72% agreed.
ReplyDeleteIt appears the governor and his legislature may have identified an exploitable racial insensitivity with which they can align. On the other hand, the question may have been framed to draw forth a specific emotional response to those no-good elitist out-of-towners who attempt to "force" our local hometown schools to give up their cherished team nicknames.
Perhaps both...
Indians = racist
ReplyDeleteVikings = not racist
