Rove's Anti-Gay Machinations Helped Create Momentum For Equal Rights

File this in the 'give-credit-where-credit-is-due' department.

Or 'bitten by unintended consequences.'

Or 'too-clever-by-half.'

Karl Rove's denials not withstanding, GOP election machinations to use gay rights as a divide-and-conquer strategy in 2004 helped bring us to where we are today - - where equal rights for gay citizens is front-and-center in the political environment and public opinion, with the support of the President, has left the intolerant in the dust.

  1. As far back as 2006, Repulicans like Jim Sensenbrenner realized the anti-gay jihad would hurt the GOP. Sensenbrenner pointed out right after the 2006 anti-gay marriage referendum (meant to beat Jim Doyle) had instead backfired by costing several Republican legislators their seats, since it brought out students who voted for gay marriage.

  2. Correct Bill Kurtz- the gay-bashing definitely fired up the college vote in 2006 for the Dems, and those folks are now between 25-30, and overwhelmingly vote Dem.

If the DPW had a brain in its head, it would demand that marriage equality be a central plank of the party platform in 2014. Walker (if he even runs) will go out of his way to court the fundies (in his delusional mind, he needs them to win here and in Iowa in 2016 without them), so he and WisGOP will get destroyed with their 20th Century mentality on this issue.

And it allows us to bring up Scotty's contual hiring and promoting of Tim Russell again. :P
