Walker: 'Enjoy Your Miniscule Tax Savings I Overstated'

Walker is hailing his policies for a 0.4% drop in a typical Wisconsin home owner's property tax bill for last year.
The administration issued a statement Monday morning saying taxes on a median value home dipped 0.4%, the first time in 12 years they've decreased. The statement credited the governor's move to strip public workers of their union rights.
The annual savings for the typical homeowner: $11 - - less than a dollar a month.
According to a news release from the Governor's office, the median tax bill for a home owner is $2.952, compared to $2.963 in 2011.
I'll use my mine for smelling salts. After a few months of saving, I'll have enough money to afford it.

Don't forget that Walker promised that a Wisconsin home owner with a median-valued home would see a property tax reduction of $700 during his first, two-year budget - - or about $350 a year, or close to $30-a-month - - a calculation and statement PolitiFact found "false."
The claim, with its shorthand presentation, rates as False.
Were these pennies worth a year of hellish political and fiscal fallout statewide?

  1. I wonder why they settled upon "median" rather than the more customary "mean." Usually when that is done it is because the latter does not support the argument. When the two are in disagreement, it is usually because the data is skewed at one end or the other. I'd really like to see the original figures.

  2. How much of that reduction is due to declining property values?

  3. It seems to me that the median sale price in Dane County dropped 8.5% from March 2011 to March 2012. That could have an impact on tax savings, too.

  4. Quite a bit ZR McD- Median sales price in Wisconsin was down 6.4% in 2011 vs. 2010, according to the Wisconsin Realtors, which means a mere 0.4% property tax decrease is in fact a pretty big RATE INCREASE.

And with declining schools and more people losing their jobs in the agre of Fitzwalkerstan, that home value isn't going to recover any time soon, and neither will new development to take pressure off of current homeowners.

  5. Whatever-these so called tax reductions are a farce- the real question is - at what cost to the soul of our state.
