A mining bill the Journal Sentinel recently called "rancid" has been taken to an even more ridiculous low by Joint Finance Committee co-chairs Sen. Alberta Darling, (R-River Hills) and Rep. Robin Vos, (R-Burlington)..
The Journal Sentinel is reporting that on a key sticking point - - retaining, or not, the current law's all-important public hearing with sworn testimony on mining applications - - the Vos/Darling proposal rolled out today would keep the hearing, but insert it into the process after an application were approved.
File that bill under "How stupid do they think we are?"
Said the swing vote holdout:
"The compromise they just offered is no compromise at all," said Sen. Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center). "In fact, it makes a bad idea worse."And the co-chairs are doing their typical inside power game, but for all the world to see.
From the Twitter feed at WisPolitics.com:
RepCoryMason: Local control on floodplain protection standards rolled back by Vos/Darling amendment on mining bill. So much for local control.
JulieMLassa: GOP committee chairs begin mining hearing, refuse 2 allow Dems time 2 read new proposal even though GOP received a full briefing #wiunion
When Demo members of the committee asked to recess to read the uncirculated amendments, Vos smarmed that he wouldn't approve it in the interests of transparency.
