My Suggested Rules For the Democratic Recall Primary

Three simple guidelines.

1. Tell us what you will do when you take office.

2. Don't tear down other Democrats.

3. Walker and his policies are the focus.

  1. My thoughts are similar:

    1. Say that you are better than Scott Walker and the disaster known as Fitzwalkerstan. Expose the many failures of this corrupt and incompetent administration.

    2. Say how you'll clean it up. Keep the focus largely positive- "We're better than this, and we will get back to the ways that created 51,000+ private sector jobs in 2010."

    3. Any criticism of fellow candidates should be along the lines of "I will improve from Scott Walker by (x,y,z)." Personal slams and other knockdowns of fellow Dems are a bad plan.

    4. Whoever wins on May 8 gets immediate and full-throated support from the others, to make sure we all turn out and end this nightmare known as Fitzwalkerstan.

Eyes on the prize at all times. It ain't about you and you taking control, it's about US.

  2. It is a referendum on Walker and his tools. Nothimg more.

  3. I'd like to see them appear together, all over the state, so we can compare/contrast. Okay to say why they are the best choice. Don't need to hear what's wrong with the other guy. Need lots of detail on what they think needs fixing and how they'd go about it. Let them take questions from the audience. Maybe candidate bios could be passed around on paper or displayed on a screen - no need to waste time on that. Get straight to issues and approaches. We need a new type of campaign and a new politics in Wisconsin. Let's not re-run 2010.

  4. James- Yup. I want to hear this phrase a lot from Democrats the next 9 1/2 weeks.

Walker and the GOP are "last in jobs, last in incomes, last in ethics." And it would be all be true.

  5. Each candidate should have to answer the question, what are the proper powers of a Wisconsin Governor? What about the "Vanna White" veto that Wisconsin Govs have enjoyed since Thompson? Would you give back any of the powers that office now has? Walker is the most powerful Governor in Wisconsin history - our system of checks and balances is out of order.

  6. Here's another question I'd like to hear answered, What is the proper role for the Lt. Governor? Would that role depend on whether the Lt. Governor is a member of your own party?

It is possible, that Walker could lose his recall and Kleefisch could win hers.

  7. The Democrats need to formulate a strong message and all the talking points that go with it. They didn't do that last time.

The Democrats can no longer be the party of good intentions. They're going up against a bunch of liars and crooks who spin lies into cotton candy. They have to be ready to play hardball.

Bring you best minds to the table and get to work now!

  8. The Republican Presidential mud-wrestling battle is a good example of what can go wrong in the nominating process. I enjoy watching the Republicans tear each other to pieces, but I'd hate to see the same thing happen in the Democratic Governors' race.

If the candidates follow Jim's and Jake's rules, the winner will emerge stronger after the primary. If not, we'll be handing a gift to Scooter.

  9. Will Walker accept a good old fashioned debate challenge?

  10. Barrett brings out "clean campaign" pledge for primary, with actual charity donations demanded of anyone who violates it!

Smart move, and the right tactics for the Dems to take. We'll see who signs on, and who follows it.

  11. Will Walker accept a good old fashioned debate challenge?

    Barring that, Thunderdome.

  12. In reality what will happen is:

Unions attack Barrett, Falk claims she has no control of outside groups.

Barrett complains about the lack of focus on Walker.

In the end, they take each other out. Regardless, Walker wins 52-48.

  13. You forgot to start with Once Upon A Time, RD. All good fairy tales do.
