The Meaning of 52%

In the political environment, 52% can have different meanings.

Rail-free Madison found out what Scott Walker thought it meant.

DREAM Act supporters found out the opposite.

It could be the combination to get federal funding, despite anti-earmark rhetoric and disdain for the federal guvmint.

Milwaukee's leading local historian puts it into context.

52% -  - apparently it has super powers.

More later.

  1. I also think we need to guard against politicians who, once elected, feel they have a mandate to do whatever they want. In Walkers case, however, he was specifically elected because of his positions on the rail project and the DNR. The rail project, in particular, was another one of those great ideas that don’t work. We had passenger rail in the past and we abandoned it because it no longer met our needs (which are different from those in Europe). We do have an excellent rail system and it is used for what rail works best for; namely freight, things like coal, and hopefully soon; iron ore.

  2. Money Walker gave back also would have improved the freight line on which passenger rail moves to the northwest.
