After bombshell #1 - - that he was not going to seek re-election next year - - Richie Daley has dropped another major pronouncement: that the re-reversal of the Chicago River be seriously studied to return Chicago's waste water (after modern treatment) to Lake Michigan, as reported by the Journal Sentinel's Dan Egan.
This would happen far down the road, as there are enormous financial, engineering and political issues to solve, but cleaning up the Chicago River, ending the city's discharge of waste not disinfected of bacteria (yes, Chicago does that to its downstream neighbors) and returning the largest diversion of water back to the lake would have tremendous benefits for the Great Lakes and far beyond.
He's right, of course. It would solve numerous problems, although it would require some massive engineering to disentangle the wastewater system, eliminate the Mississipi River infestations from the Chicago River, etc.
