I found this whole tempest in a teapot astounding. Clearly anyone who could read those emails and find a "conspiracy" in it just has not hung around scientists. I have (I worked for quite a few years at one of the national labs.) This is how scientists talk amongst themselves. It all sounded just like any number of discussions I've had over beer, or tea, or lunch. Just the way people talk when they're with an audience that they know understands what the hell they're talking about. It's work chat. And it helped, among other things, to discover the top quark. Though I'm sure a lot of these same people don't believe that exists either because they can't see it.
