Don't bother getting excited over the so-called OWI reform measure working its way through the Legislature that will make a 4th conviction a felony.
This means that for most first-time OWI offenders, a ticket is all that goes on their records, with two more repeat offenses rated as misdemeanors only before the hammer could be brought down on #4 - - if a judge has the will to actually impose a firm sentence.
Wisconsin law enables drunken drivers and repeat offenders the freedom of the road with minimal consequences.
Everyone else is endangered, thanks to weak-kneed legislators and influential lobbyists.

ReplyDelete@Jim I agree the laws should be tougher, so I see this new law as a positive step (unless it includes the bartender language), though just one step on a long road. Hopefully after it passes the pressure will stay on and more baby steps can be taken.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment, Dave, but I have to disagree.
ReplyDeleteThe Legislature has had decades to do something productive, but in the last year chickened out bigtime.
Lives will be damaged and lost as a result.
All in all, a shameful display by electeds.
As I have replied on many of your OWI legislation posts - this is one issue I am in complete agreement with you on James.
ReplyDeleteWell except maybe the aspect regarding raising taxes, that is yet another money grab in the name of (fill in the blank) OWI reform imho.
Unfortunately real reform is falling on deaf (and semi-intoxicated) ears in Madison.
