We Need The Hoan Bridge II: Smaller, Less Wasteful Of Land

In an age of shrinking budgets, the notion that the overbuilt Hoan Bridge would be rebuilt as is...is foolish.

Smaller, less gaudy, is better for all parties, including taxpayers, and certainly for the City of Milwaukee where the bridge now sits as a monument to a bygone, excessive era.

  1. Your opinion requires the Hoan bridge to demolished in the first place, which it should not.

As with most politics, this is just another attempt to foist unnecessary expenses on the taxpayer, so the few the few behind the scene operators can selfishly gain.

  2. @Anon No matter what they do with the Hoan it will need significant construction in the near future that will likely limit its use for an extended period of time anyhow.

  3. While I don't know if I agree that it's a monument to a bygone era of excess, the revised Hoan/794 interchange can likely take up a *lot* less land than it does. Whole chunks of my neighborhood were consumed by it. Building the new bridge should be pursued at the same time that a new, less consumptive path to it.

Also, I think we should look at reclaiming the former home sites along Bay Street east of KK. The houses there were demolished decades ago to widen Bay Street. A narrower street and reclaiming the land would benefit the tax base in the long run.

  4. Clearly this crossing could be accomplished with a much smaller bridge more closely engaged with its surroundings. Think of all the prime real estate that would be freed up an returned to the tax base.
