Environmental Journalism Returning To Journal Sentinel
Don Behm provides a fascinating account of how controlled burns and other management practices are literally creating valuable habitat acreage in Southeastern Wisconsin.
Here is the money line from yesterday's story, "This happened not by buying more acres to protect, but by management of the landscape, especially removing exotic shrubs and weeds by hand, said Don Reed...".For all of us who would love to burn, its mainly used on prairies. In forests and woodlands my main problem is buckthorn and the best method for removal is physically pulling. However many of the stumps/low growth are over 40 years old. On these you use a pickax and a lot of brute force, its back breaking but necessary. The native seed bank is truly amazing, I have brought nothing in and the diversity outstanding.
