The Brookings Institution summarizes how it is that the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis is close to reopening after its collapse last year, but the US transportation funding system hasn't gotten at the systematic flaws that continue to allow thousands of deficient structures to remain in disrepair.
Interesting in Wisconsin that I-94 south of Milwaukee is ticketed for $1.9 billion in repairs and widening that isn't aimed at structural deficiencies.
So-called "design deficiencies," yes, but that's different, and far more arbitrary.
Keep that in mind as the Congressional transportation reauthorization moves forward next year.
You want to see an emphasis on fixing structural deficiences, first.
Then getting at another deficiency - - the lack of focus on transit.
