UW-M WATER Institute Director on Radio Wednesday Morning

Val Klump, Director of the UW-Milwaukee Great Lakes WATER Institute, will be a guest on "Lake Effect," the 10-11 a.m. interview program hosted by Jane Hampden on radio station 89.7 WUWM-FM.

Klump is a recognized expert on the Great Lakes. He will discuss threats to these bodies of fresh surface water, a subject of huge importance because the Great Lakes account for 20% of the world's fresh surface water supply.

The WATER Institute's website describes the facility this way:

"From its dockside site in the port of Milwaukee, the WATER Institute represents the only major aquatic research institution located on Lake Michigan and the largest U.S. institution of its kind in the Great Lakes region."

WATER Institute personnel have been in the news of late, helping locate the sources of fecal pollution flowing into the Menomonee River from Miller Park and intestinal bacteria found on Bradford and other Lake Michigan Beaches.

The WATER Institute has also published a series of fact sheets to facilitate the public's understanding of how groundwater moves in the region: that's a major issue in the discussion of whether water should be diverted from Lake Michigan across the subcontinental divide.

WATER stands for Wisconsin Aquatic Technology and Environmental Research.
