As one who works in the oil industry and also lives on the Great Lakes, I don't want to see offshore drilling. However, we can easily drill under the lakes (at least for some distance) from on-shore installations. Something along these lines was proposed in Michigan (where they already have land based wells). I see no problem with this approach, but there are too many people who will associate "oil and Great Lakes" and try to stop even this sort of sensible proposal.
