[updated, 3:15 p.m. As a self-editing clarification, I changed the word "earned" to "earns" in the headline to more clearly indicate that Thomas should be removed as a Journal Sentinel op-ed writer. "Earned" might suggest that the dismissal took place.]
Does regular columnist Cal Thomas really merit syndicated space on the newspaper's Op-Ed page, given his ugly, public remark last week in an exchange with The Heritage Foundation's Genevieve Wood before a chortling conservative audience about Rachel Maddow and others working at MSNBC?
“Well I’m really glad, Genevieve, that you played the Rachel Maddow clip,” Thomas said, “because I think that she is the best argument in favor of her parents using contraception. I would be all for that, and all of the rest of the crowd at MSNBC, too, for that matter."Video here. You can see that Thomas meant it, though he apologized later to Maddow.
His remarks should earn his removal from news outlets as a credible commentator.
So back to the make-up of the Journal Sentinel's op-ed page. Of course it's a place for varied voices, but surely there is a less-repulsive conservative alternative - - and one not so blatantly at war with his or her own pro-life righteousness.
Thomas claims to be a spokesman for people with values, as the headline on his Jan. 24th column suggests:
Conservatives making a choice on valuesValues?
Let him go. He sounded like Michael Savage on that video, and your sister station WTMJ-4 finally got rid of his hate-mongering.
