What's Your "Walk Score?"

A Canadian friend - - well, a former Madisonian now living in Alberta - - was kind enough to send along this "Walk Score" web calculator.

My score, in a near-UWM neighborhood: 75 of 100.

Plenty of days I do all my errands on foot.

This scoring of neighborhoods in terms of walkable is to be taken with a certain wariness.

I plugged in my address; all the familiar streets came up, as well as a few recognizable facilities.

There is a middle school ten blocks from my home; it is walkable (my kids walked to it). It is not on the map. It was a pretty good school, except for the fact that now-Mayor Larry Nelson used to bloviate his way to a disproportionate salary as a teacher there.

Fifteen years ago there was a Super Valu grocery store. (the meat department was for the birds; the produce manager was a genius). It has been out of business for sixteen years. It is now the Educators Credit Union and a few dental offices. Nevertheless it is still listed as our local walkable grocer.

I only wish it was here. But it has been gone since my kids were toddlers.

Don't believe everything you see on the net.
